The National Sports Team - Shape and Space
This series of lessons uses a topic theme of a newly discovered island which wants to enter an international sporting event. Although civilised, it does not have a national identity and needs a flag, a logo, etc. Pupils first look at what sporting events the islanders might be good at, carrying out a sorting activity. The following lessons take a shape and space focus, visiting symmetry (reflective and rotational), properties and features of triangles, tangrams and nets of 3D shapes.

Lesson 1
LESSON +
Pupils are introduced to this sport-related Shape and Space topic, where they will help design a sporting identity for a national team. They think about the attributes required to participate in different sports and link it to the abilities of a new nation. They use data analysis and sorting to help make decisions.
-
Lesson 2
LESSON +
Pupils look at reflective and rotational symmetry in flags of various countries. They explore symmetrical patterns and design their own.
-
Lesson 3
LESSON +
Pupils focus on shapes used in brand logos and the properties of those shapes. They change a base shape into a logo design by dividing it up, tangram style, into component shapes. They will then use those shapes as a starting point to create a design. Pupils' language could be extended to include different types of translations.
-
Lesson 4
LESSON +
Pupils look at different types of triangles, their angles and other features. They carry out an an open-ended, pattern making activity, using different triangles.
-
Lesson 5
LESSON +
Pupils look at the prism shapes which make up sports bags, before investigating which shapes might make a net for a 3D solid. This optional lesson extends the unit from 2D to 3D shape.
-
Lesson 6
LESSON +
Pupils design a logo, a flag or a sports bag for the national team of Mariva, writing design notes that explains their design and draws on their knowledge of shape, e.g. symmetry, tessellation and nets. This work could cover more than one lesson.
