Sports Pitches - Scale, Area and Perimeter
This series of lessons starts by looking at sports pitches as a stimulus for estimating and measuring larger lengths leading to a lesson on scale. Pupils then carry out a range of activities related to area and perimeter, with each subsequent lesson taking one specific focus, increasing skill and complexity each time. Interactives are used to model methods and then pupils work with squared paper to cement concepts and skills.

Lesson 1

Pupils identify sports pitches from aerial photos. They then estimate measurements of various rooms, halls, pitches, etc. within the school grounds. Pupils move on to measuring these areas with measuring equipment to judge how close their estimation was.

Lesson 2
LESSON +
Pupils work out real sizes from scale diagrams and then work out the best scales to accommodate plans of pitches on a sheet of paper, drawing out rectangles to exact sizes.

Lesson 3
LESSON +
Pupils revise their knowledge of measuring a perimeter, as well as developing their skills for working out the area of a shape. They look at formula representations of both calculations.

Lesson 4
LESSON +
Pupils use counting and estimating methods to work out the area of irregular shapes. They make their own shapes and challenge other pupils to work out the area.

Lesson 5
LESSON +
Pupils work out areas of rectangular components of compound shapes and then total these to get an area of the whole shape.

Lesson 6
LESSON +
Pupils calculate area of compound shapes made up of adjoining rectangles and triangles. During a practical activity they investigate the statement that the area of all triangles is half of the rectangle that bounds it.

Lesson 7
LESSON +
Pupils use their learning from previous sessions to design, scale and measure an arena for a set of real (or imaginary) sports. Pupils scale their pitches onto a diagram.
