Simple Addition and Subtraction

Simple Addition and Subtraction

The first three lessons of this unit provide repetitive practice of "counting on" skills, including dice games and telling simple addition stories. The focus then switches to subtraction - a similar series of lessons provides plenty of "take away" practice using "counting back" as a method. The final two lessons combine both skills, firstly in a dice game and then in the context of telling a more complex "arrive and leave" type maths story.

  • Lesson 1 - Fishy Counting On

Lesson 1 - Fishy Counting On LESSON +

Pupils develop their understanding of number and addition by considering the idea of “more than” a starting amount, e.g. 2 more than 4. This is presented in a “story” context and is then followed up with practice, using dice to set problems.

  • Lesson 2 - Number Line Counting On

Lesson 2 - Number Line Counting On LESSON +

Pupils continue with the concept of “counting on”, using an interactive number line to support their understanding of mental addition. They learn to put the biggest number first and why. Games are used to provide a question bank of appropriately levelled questions for pupils to cement their skills.

  • Lesson 3 - Addition Stories

    Lesson 3 - Addition Stories LESSON +

Pupils return to a real life context to cement their understanding and skills. They use an interactive tool that generates basic ‘addition stories’, with simple animations to show the act of adding more objects to a starting number.

  • Lesson 4 - Shark Subtraction

    Lesson 4 - Shark Subtraction LESSON +

Pupils switch to subtraction, counting back small numbers. This lesson does not attempt any other strategies for subtraction as it is an “early days” lesson, showing the concept of subtraction as “taking away” a number of objects and reducing the total number.

  • Lesson 5 - Abacus Take Aways

Lesson 5 - Abacus Take Aways LESSON +

Pupils carry on practising counting back, using an abacus as a visual support. Games are then used to provide a question bank of appropriately levelled questions for pupils to cement their skills.

  • Lesson 6 - Subtraction Stories

    Lesson 6 - Subtraction Stories LESSON +

Similar to lesson 3, but practising subtraction rather than addition, pupils return to a real life context to cement their understanding and skills. They use an interactive tool that generates basic ‘subtraction stories’, with simple animations to show the act of taking objects from a starting number.

  • Lesson 7 - Dice Race Adding and Subtracting

Lesson 7 - Dice Race Adding and Subtracting LESSON +

Pupils consolidate their understanding of addition and subtraction gained in the previous lessons. This lesson revises the skills and then combines them in the context of playing a dice game where pupils take turns to add and subtract. They will also continue to record number sentences and use mathematical vocabulary.

  • Lesson 8 - Addition and Subtraction Stories

Lesson 8 - Addition and Subtraction Stories LESSON +

This final lesson brings together the two operations in a Maths Story context. Pupils tell a longer story that includes both “arriving” (addition) and “leaving” (subtraction). This lesson can be carried out in the computer suite or using props/pictures.
