'Highlighter' Text Analysis Tools
These highlighter tools are perfect for focusing pupils on language features of texts. Paste or type in a piece of text, then use the different coloured pens to highlight words and phrases, e.g. dependent clauses or descriptive language. Try hiding words that are highlighted using the 'eye' icons. Ask what effect this has on the text. The 'Collapsing' and 'Grouping' variations can be used for different approaches. 'Grouper' zaps words in each colour into boxes, so that words of different types can be 'collected'. The 'Collapser' allows texts to be shrunk as words are removed, showing how important they are to meaning or effect, as their absence is noticed.

'The Naming of the Years' Story Writing Pack
In 2013, Chinese New Year is on Sunday, February 10th. This pack focuses on the tale of the naming of each year. A non-fiction based pack is also available, 'About Chinese New Year'. The 'Naming of the Years' tale is an example of a fable or folk tale which uses personification. This writing technique is used commonly in this type of story. Supporting materials provide everything you might need to take this idea forwards into a writing project, including a comparison with the Four Musicians Of Bremen story.

This age band starts with the three hundred most frequent words. Following that, the spelling lists draw words from Phase 5 of Letters and Sounds. The frequent words are in groups of 10, the phase 5 words in groups of 7 (which could be joined to make longer lists). Please let us know if you would like any other common spelling groupings as we would be happy to publish supplementary lists.

The main source of words is the NLS Word Level Objectives and Phase 6 of Letters and Sounds. Finally, 2 supplementary lists are provided as Yr 3 and 4 Useful Words and the Year 4 and 5 Medium Frequency Words
