Gorilla Shopping - Taking Away
Keep a running total of how many bananas are left each time.
Help the gorilla fill his basket and work out how many bananas are left. Challenge pupils to jot down the problem as a calculation, eg 17 bananas, take away 5, leaves 12 bananas: 17 - 5 = 12. Ask a pupil to talk through the problem to the class, eg 'There are 20 bananas left and the gorilla wants to buy 4, so I take away 4 from 20... I start at 20 on the numberline and jump back 4...'
